REPORT
M. E. M. RING,
Librarian.
ON THE STUDENTS' HOSTELS OF THE UNIVERSITY
FOR THE YEAR 1928.
LUGARD HALL.
The number of students resident in Lugard Hall during the year 1928 has averaged about 40. The health and discipline have been good and there is nothing further to report.
ELIOT HALL.
M. H. ROFFEY, Warden.
NUMBER IN RESIDENCE: -The number of students residing in Eliot Hall during the two terms of 1928 were as follow:-
Opening Closing
60
First Term
59 (One left for England). Second Term
59
59 DISCIPLINE:-The discipline of the students has been quite satisfactory throughout the whole year.
HEALTH :-During the period under consideration there was no epidemic of any kind in the Hostel and only one illness of a serious nature. This one case, however, shows clearly the need for the appointment of a Medical Officer to whom a Warden can appeal directly a resident reports sick. Had such an officer

existed during 1928, the student in question would have been examined and the necessary operation performed 24 hours earlier than it actually was, thus avoiding the complications which placed a life in danger for several days.
HOSTEL ACTIVITIES:-The two social events of the year were the Annual Concert and Dance held on February 11th, and a Tea Dance which took place on October 27th. Both these ventures were very successful and allowed the residents (those from overseas in particular) to repay in some measure the hospitality they receive in Hong Kong. The Hostel has en- tered fully and with fair success into University Sports and athletics. Mr. Cheong Tuck Wing, the ex-chairman of the Hostel, again won the Individual Championship Cup, and it was chiefly due to his efforts that Eliot Hall finished runners- up for the Inter-Hostel Championship Cup. In addition the Hostel carried off the Inter-Hostel Tennis Championship, and put up good fights in other Inter-Hostel events,
CHINESE CLASS-Early in the year an evening class in Chinese was arranged by these students from the F.M.S. whose knowledge of Chinese was scant, and an average attendance of 10 was maintained throughout the year.
HOSTEL IMPROVEMENTS:-Both the English and Chinese sections of the library have had several volumes added, and the common room has been made more comfortable by the addition of new furniture. To make this possible subscriptions were given by the residents.
During the long vacation the Hostel was re-decorated and improvements carried out in the kitchens and pantry.
P.S.
W. FAID.
Warden.
FIRE FIGHTING APPLIANCES:-I should like once again to stress the need for providing both fire fighting appliances and fire escapes.
As regards the former an adequate supply of water is not available for use at the Hostels, and with regard to the latter there is no fire escape of any description.
